All Three Blade Runner Poems by Tim Lane

"No Dove" is the third poem in a series entitled The Blade Runner Poems. The poems are meditations on themes from the films Blade Runner and Blade Runner 2049. I had to make "No Dove" because the general consensus is that Officer K is dying in the penultimate scene of Blade Runner 2049. I confess that as I sat in the theater watching the film by myself, this never occurred to me. Reviewers lean on the fact that the music that ushers replicant Roy Batty out of Blade Runner is reintroduced as Officer K leans back, bleeding on those snowy steps in Blade Runner 2049. I actually use a visual aspect of the scene of Roy Batty's death to refute the notion that Officer K is dying.

Here are all three Blade Runner poems.

In Which the Poet Introduces Another Blade Runner Poem by Tim Lane

How do we make reality? We collect data and make arguments. I have continued to work on this poem.

Mad World(s): A New Painting by Tim Lane

I often feel like I make my best work when I go off-roading, as I did for this new, larger piece on burlap. I have not worked on anything approaching 48”x36” for a long time, and I haven’t tried to work on an unconventional surface for a long time, either.

I used to experiment more. Early on I used to try to paint on just about anything available, just to keep painting: cardboard, mattresses, abandoned doors, windows, plywood…

It has also been a heck of a long time since I have made a piece dominated by oil paintsticks.

My preoccupation with space, quantum physics and 80s music continues. Mad World(s) is a new painting in the series, The Realities Project.

Projector Intersection Engine Angel by Tim Lane

There’s a new painting in my current series, The Realities Project. Early on I was thinking of the central image as a point of intersection where realities met, and were then projected.

I was thinking about differences in perception, the possibility that everything is being played out in slightly different variations beyond some imperceptible gap we haven’t figured out how to cross, the deterioration of our ability to trust our senses, the manipulation and domination of data…

After a few iterations of the image, I began to think of them as engines of reality.

And then a friend texted and said that the images reminded her of angels.

Projector, intersection, engine, angel.

The work continues to capture my preoccupations with inner- and outer-space, quantum mechanics, politics, and 80s music.

This Much Is True by Tim Lane

On this day in 1983, Spandau Ballet released their third studio album, True. The album included the group’s two hit singles, “True” and “Gold.” The album makes a significant cameo in the final scene of my 80s coming-of-age novel, Your Silent Face. You can explore Your Silent Face on Amazon, at Kirkus Reviews, or on this website.

Tempers: Sightseeing by Tim Lane

Really like this new hauntingly beautiful video by Tempers! It could just be me, but it feels very 80s. If you have spent any time at my site, then you know that I am a huge fan of 80s New Wave, and I also really like the current synth-pop connection of to it.

New Review of Your Silent Face by Tim Lane

Before continuing with this #saturdayselfpromotion post, I want to recognize the privilege of being able to make it….

There is a new review of Your Silent Face. I invite you to check it out.

Your Silent Face is my 80s coming-of-age-slash-ode-to-New-Wave-music novel. The narrator is Stuart Page. The setting is Flint, Michigan. “Who would you rather be? Ian Curtis or Bono?”

5.0 out of 5 stars A relatable, emotional story with a playlist to match!

Lane writes of finding oneself at home after a year in college. A time, for many, that is fraught with boundary testing, alcohol experimentation, friendships reimagined and tender moments as the mortality of loved ones is realized and the uncertainty of what the path forward looks like.

Stuart, like any well-written main character, shows his humanness, is not perfect. The story had me laughing, reflective, annoyed and wondering if maybe I should try my hand at poetry. The answer, good reader, is no, I should not.

Would and have recommended to friends.
