Nation of Language's Second Release /  by Tim Lane

Brooklyn-based synth pop (revivalists) band Nation of Language has released a second album, A Way Forward. I really like this band. And I confess that they remind me of a lot of things 80s—a mash up of many 80s bands like OMD, Depeche Mode, Ultravoxx and even Roxy Music.

(I’m all for a synth pop revival, by the way! Far as I can tell, it’s been on for a while, now.)

After you get past the opening of the first track, the pace feels a bit less insistent than the songs on Introduction, Presence (2020)—but I haven’t spent a lot of time with the new album, yet. I’m just excited it’s out. See for yourself.

If you like 80s synth music, you will like Nation of Language.

Above the Cove, a New Painting /  by Tim Lane

Above the Cove is a continuation of The Sublime series. Another small landscape populated by a solitary futuristic object. A ship? A portal? Both? I am not sure. When I began this series, it was clearly an alien aircraft, in my mind. But now, I do not know. It is an arrival, or something arriving. Advanced technology. Something we cannot prevent. Or an event for which we will be responsible—or held responsible. Someday or some day.

Mixtapes, Playlists /  by Tim Lane

Got a new Spotify playlist for ya. It’s been a while. I used to make mixtapes. When you could make tapes. Now, I make playlists. Read a couple chapters of Rob Sheffield’s book Love Is a Mixtape this morning. There was a reviewer who really really really took Sheffield to task for erroneously describing just what exactly a mixtape is. Apparently there were rules? Nobody told me. I only really have one parameter for playlists these days: seven songs. Unless it’s a compilation of one category, or a specific extended collection of songs.

I’ve been spending my morning with A Flock of Seagulls. Were we ready for this band in the early 80s? I don’t know. I think their first three albums have some amazing music.

Do you struggle with the change in season? The winter months? The lack of light? #SAD #seasonalaffectivedisorder #winterblues I do, and I turn to music. A Flock of Seagulls music is like a solar flare, a burst of energy. It makes me want to pogo around the room. However, yeah, some of the music is a little dark, I guess—introspective. I love it all. I like to listen to my music through my headphones. During any season.
